The Department of Bengali has a long prestigious heritage and it has been working continuously to explore and expand human resource in its multifarious potentiality and manifestation by various ways of learning and intellectual activities. Department of Bengali started journey since 1987, the year of establishment of this Institution. Initially it was single-person department, the name of the teacher being Dr.Ranjushree Patra who joined as Lecturer in the year 1987 on the recommendation of the West Bengal College Service Commssion (WBCSC). In the year 1988 she promoted as a Reader. In the year 1996 she left this educational institution and joined another educational institute. In 1997 Dr. Bithika Mandal joined as a Reader in the vacant substantive post. After her retirement in the year 2016, Anjuman Lipi and Dr.Arijit Bhattacharyya joined this department in the year 2017 by the recommendation of the West Bengal College Service Commission (WBCSC) against newly sanctioned post. At Present, two Assistant Professors, three Part Time Teachers, and two State Aided College Teachers form a close-knit unit which will be considered an asset anywhere. As per the recommendation of the West Bengal College Service Commission (WBCSC) another Assistant Professor (Substantive Post) is expected to join the Bengali department in the academic year 2020-2021. Anjuman Lipi has been working as an Assistant Professor and Head of the department. It is to be added further in the context that the Post Graduation teaching course running successfully from 2019-2020 academic session. Dr. Arijit Bhattacharyya assigned as a Coordinator of the Post Graduate section.

At Mankar College the department of Bengali is recognized as a very rich department from the long past. Dr.Ranjushree Patra ; Dr.Bithika Mandal were all very distinguished teachers. The glory of tradition is still continuing unabated. Apart from its heavy academic workload and activities the department has organized many special lectures and seminars not only on conventional issues of Literature, but also in most of the valuable areas of literature beyond the prescribed syllabus of different courses. Interactions between students and resource persons and network with various inter -disciplinary domains are always encouraged by the department. The academician and faculty members of the department are always enthusiastic to carry out intensive research work in various areas of language & literature and its multi-disciplinary components.

Students Passing out of the department generally find placement as faculty members/ researchers in colleges and other educational Institutions. Apart from this, many students are to be found in different public and private sector organizations, media houses, advertising agencies, and news agencies of repute.

Vision of the Department:

The Department ofBengali will create a climate on campus and in the greater community that promotes tolerance and acceptance of differing viewpoints which will foster civic mindedness and civic responsibility. The Department will contribute to a better understanding of the world by engaging in, and supporting intercultural and interdisciplinary studies. In addition, the Department shall work to offer our students with the best education possible by continuing to explore appropriate know-how’s for inclusion in the learning experience. The Department shall continue to explore emerging issues in pedagogy that make for a more productive learning environment. Using a value‐ added approach to education and learning, it will contribute to the future success of our students by helping them to develop skill sets that can make them competitive in the employment market, inclined to being active in the political arena, and committed to life‐ long learning experiences. The department is also committed to the process of developing, refining, and implementing an active assessment process that provides us with information and insight into how to improve our educational and co‐ curricular offerings. Therefore, the goal of the department is to transmit the knowledge of the discipline by providing courses, characterized by academic excellence as well as social relevance.

Mission of the Department:

  • To provide basic knowledge regarding concepts, theories, issues and debates that characterize the study of contemporary Bengali Literature so that students can confidently appear in TET, SSC, PSC, WBCS, NET, SET and other competitive examinations;
  • To identify probable areas of future research and enhance skills so that some of the students can be at the forefront of research in near future;
  • To initiate intellectual urge among the students for understandings most pressing political issues in terms of historical, comparative, theoretical and policy oriented perspectives.
  • To give importance on our educational mission and learning in both high quality and innovative teaching and support for outstanding student experience. Commitment to the highest standards of academic consistency and vitality. Serving social, cultural and economic needs of the community & the society.
  • To give importance on strong research orientation of students and faculty.
  • To coordinate among different dimensions of our work.
  • To create a highly manifested academic environment to support better student experience and teaching as well as research.
  • To provide some special lectures of some eminent Professors of Bengali Literature and its allied subjects to the students.
  • Provide new technologies for teaching-learning and research, e.g. Virtual Classrooms,Wifi etc.
