Department of Geography

The beginning and the progress made with time:

The department of Geography, Mankar College started its journey in the year 1995 with the introduction of General Course in Geography. Since then, the department went through several phases fabricated with appointment of faculties and structural up-gradation. In 1999 the department received its first full time faculty Dr. GopaSamanta, groomed the infant department till she left to join the University of Burdwan. The Geography honours course was introduced in 2000. Afterwards, the department went through gradual infrastructural development bolstered by the joining of full time faculties. In 2011, smart class room was installed and required items of equipment were purchased to keep pace with changing curriculum. In 2016 GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory has been established to facilitate project as well as field based activities. Since the beginning, still today the department has maintained a place of reckoning regarding demand ratio of admission of students,teaching in the classroomand performance of the studentsamong the colleges of the affiliating university, the University of Burdwan.

Objective of the Department:

The faculties always try to maintain the quality of teaching so that the students can develop a clear conception of the subject.The dedicated teachers put forward their best efforts to prepare the students for examinations by enriching theirknowledge base as well as providing them with study materials. Students are equipped with practical skill which they can apply inacademic and professional career in future. The faculties always motivate the students and acquaint themwith ideas of contemporary research activities related to their curriculum. Students are encouraged to take part in cultural, sports and extended activities and programmes of the institution along with the academic activities. Discipline and healthy environment in the department are maintained with care.To monitor the development of the students,emphasis is always laid upon attendance in classes, performance in class tests and maintaining contact with their guardians. Continuous teaching-learning process, evaluation, and monitoring and close teacher- student relation contribute to the key of success of the department.

Activity of the Department

Different conventional and advance teaching learning processes are followed by the faculty. The advance teaching learning process includesProject based learning, ICT learning (power point presentation), online classes in zoom platform, online class and sharing of study material in Canvas platform, uploading of study materials in Whatsapp Group, Compulsory field visit and preparation of field report under the supervision of the teachers.

To increase the exposure of the students and enrich their knowledge the department arranges seminars and conferences with resource persons from different higher institutions. Students also deliver talks in departmental seminars using poster and power point presentation. Every year a departmental wall magazine is published and students take part in exhibition in annual cultural programme. A considerable number of students take part in college NSS activities as volunteers. They also participate in NCC activities.

The faculties of the department areresolutein their effort to provide effective and quality teaching. They are devoted to scholarly activities which helps them to be at par with the contemporary research activities and also participate in workshops and training programmes to enhance their skill.They publish research papers in reputed journals, and present papers in seminars and conferences.The faculties have successfully completed Minor Research Projects funded by UGC. Their research experience also enlightens the students and encourages them to pursue higher studies.
